Thank you for taking the time to check out my page and consider supporting me! I’m so excited to be a part of this incredible artistic fellowship. Union Docs is offering all selected participants an opportunity to grow creatively, collaborate, and learn from more seasoned sound artists. I truly believe that this is will be a life changing experience. However, trying to balance this work with my already demanding schedule of grad school (I’m starting my thesis research) and two music teaching jobs is daunting. Given that all selected participants are required to pay to help keep the UnionDocs program running smoothly, I’m hoping to make that money back, which I would use to help support myself this semester. I’m asking for $3000, which would cover the cost of the program, as well as the money I’m losing by teaching less (to participate in the lab).
My main goals for the lab are to create a meaningful project responding in some way to the current events in the world right now, and to make high quality connections with the other artists. While my project ideas will change and develop once the lab actually starts, one potential concept I’m considering is: An experimental musical + journalistic project responding to some of the major crises in the world right now, specifically the climate crises and extreme financial inequality. Sonically, through the lens of radical jazz musicians like Archie Shepp and Milford Graves, grounded in the black musical tradition. The project would incorporate field recording and snippets of interviews from modern and past black thinkers and artist speaking on revolution, black people’s deep connection with nature and their view on where the world is headed.
*I’d love to compose a short piano composition for each of my contributors.*
Thank you!
