Project Synopsis

Across Latin America, transgender communities are challenging historical erasure through a growing movement of community-led archives. Our film will visit grassroots collective memory projects like Argentina’s Archivo de la Memoria Trans, Peru’s Archivo de la Memoria Marica, Mexico’s Archivo de la Memoria Transmasculina, and Costa Rica’s Transvida, which reveal how archiving becomes a form of activism, cultural preservation, and collective healing. Through digitized photographs, oral histories, and family albums reimagined through chosen kinship, these trans community archives serve not only as repositories of memory but also as tools of political advocacy—demanding justice, reparations, and recognition in the face of state violence, censorship, and rising far-right hostility. By centering trans and queer lives, art, and organizing, “We Were Never Invisible” will frame archival work as a living, participatory act of resistance—where the past becomes a rallying point for building more inclusive futures.
