SYNOPSIS

When a family business making purses from old books becomes a lifeline for their son Christian, who is on the autism spectrum, it reshapes all of their lives. As his parents enter their mid 70s, they face difficult questions about his future and whether he can carry the business forward. Bindings is a moving portrait of love, caregiving, and planning for what comes next.

ARTIST STATEMENT

People with Neurodivergent family members know all too well the unspoken anxiety and concern about the future. Both of us grew up with cousins with autism and saw our families make difficult decisions for their future. Over the course of making this film, we found that the Scranton family’s story reflected the similar frustrations our own families experienced.

We wanted to tell this story about aging and disability that is rarely portrayed in the mainstream media. “Bindings” explores one family’s story, and the weighty personal choices that shape their life together. We hope sharing their perspectives will create a dialogue about the importance of disability care that is compassionate, inclusive, and centered on dignity for every person.
