MORE ABOUT SOUND FIELDS AND THE ARCHIVES ISSUE:
Sound Fields is a publication and event series about the art and craft of audio documentary. It’s a labor of love toward field-building and solidarity for audio documentarians today.
We launched our first online issue in February 2024. It featured essays and Q and As from contributors from four continents, including Axel Kacoutié, Tej Adeleye, Cass Adair, Jazmine Green, Sarah Escocoff, Cass Adair and more.
In our first Letter from an Editor, Sayre Quevedo called on all of us to reconnect with what brought us to this work in the first place, why we do it, who we do it for, and what we’re willing to give up and to contribute if we intend to carry on. “The question of what constitutes an audio documentary has everything to do with how we make our work,” he wrote. “But also with who that work makes us.”
We have been overwhelmed with the warm welcome Sound Fields has received from our fellow documentarians. It turns out we weren’t the only ones asking big questions, craving a space to hash things out and connect. Our community has encouraged us to think even bigger. One thing we heard a variation of again and again was “I love Sound Fields, but I want to hold it in my hands!”
So we’re going to do it.
For issue 2, we want to publish Sound Fields in print. And we’re going to do it on a shoestring, with your help.
Issue 2 is The Archives Issue – an attempt to reckon with the future of our field by engaging with the past. As we embark on our first print issue, we’re intrigued by ideas about how to make tangible the ephemera of sounds, of RSS feeds, of digital media. And we’re inviting our global network of fellow documentarians to consider: How does documentary audio intersect with the archive; and How are we as audio documentarians archivists? You can expect essays and Q and As from some of the most groundbreaking audio documentarians working today.

And YES, we’re asking you to commit to supporting issue 2 before it exists! That’s because this is a truly community-created project and we need you to pledge your support now so we can pay for design and printing. Thanks to the generous support of our friends at Transom we are committed to paying an honorarium to all contributors (if you’d also like to donate to our honoraria and editorial fund – please choose a VIP reward!), but those of us behind the scenes are still all working on a volunteer basis
Our goal is to pre-sell at least 200 copies so we can print and send you a beautiful art object of a journal in the spring of 2025.
